Brown snakes invading homes
THERE has been an influx of snakes entering houses in the Toowoomba region this season.
Anthony Adams from Anthony’s Snake Relocating said he had received two or three calls per week so far this year from residents finding snakes inside their homes.
“I think they’re just looking for a drink and looking for food,” Mr Adams said.
“They know there’s water in there, and they know there’s going to be other animals around a water source.
“Every home I get them from, if they’re not in the house they have water in the yard of some sort, either a tank or a pool.
“It also could be shelter from the heat.”
Mr Adams has been relocating both venomous and non-venomous snakes, with an especially large number of eastern brown snakes found inside houses this season.
So far in 2020, Mr Adams has been called out to rescue two eastern brown snakes at
Glenvale homes, a young brown snake found in a young girl’s bedroom in Allora, and an eastern brown found in a toilet at another Allora home.
Mr Adams said Glenvale seemed to be a popular area for eastern browns.
“I’m getting a call every week for an eastern brown in Glenvale, it’s definitely the suburb that has more, and Gatton as well,” he said.
“I have got a couple from up near Middle Ridge where the creek runs through, they’re spreading out through the neighbourhood looking for water.”
If you do find a snake in your home or on your property, Mr Adams said it was best not to approach it or disturb it.
“If you’re in front of it, it’s more likely to bite you if you’re harassing it or trying to pick it up,” he said.
“Either call someone to come and remove it or leave it alone and it will eventually move on by itself.”
