New GP clinic for Millmerran residents

MILLMERRAN residents will get access to GPs again, with the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service opening a new centre today.

The Millmerran Primary Health Care Centre will open to support general practice in the town, following the shock closure of the Millmerran Medical Centre two weeks ago.

The centre will be open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm on the grounds of the Millmerran Hospital.

Darling Downs Health executive director Joanne Shaw said that the priority was to open the facility as soon as possible to maintain primary care in Millmerran.

“Hospital staff have been able to support the increase in primary health presentations to the emergency department, but the opening of this practice will mean a much better experience for patients rather than waiting in emergency for non-urgent care,” she said.

“We have worked hard to make sure we can continue caring for the Millmerran community and I would like to thank our staff for putting this together so quickly.”

Dr Andrew Reedy closed his privately-run medical practice a few days into the

New Year, saying he had no choice.

“The reason we didn’t reopen is I had no staff,” he told

The Chronicle last week. “The Millmerran Medical Centre was a four-doctor centre (and) we had two doctors whose contracts were finishing up, and then the other doctor hired to replace one of them pulled out.
