School graduates wake to uni offers

IT’S not every day that you get to wake up to multiple offers from medical schools around the country, but that was the reality for Toowoomba teen James Bilbrough yesterday.

He joined thousands of other students across the state in receiving a university offer as part of the January release round.

A former Toowoomba Grammar School student, Mr Bilbrough said he was sent an offer to study medicine at the University of Queensland early in the morning, a first round offer for the subject.

This offer was followed by a similar one from Monash University hours later.

“I had no words. It had been a dream for a really long time,” Mr Bilbrough said.

“I had to read it a few times but then I called my mum and dad, and then my grandparents.”

Days earlier, Mr Bilbrough had also received an offer to study medicine at University of New South Wales, something he is now leaning towards.

“It’s hard to reject an offer from medicine from anywhere,” Mr Bilbrough said.

“I would like to move interstate, and UNSW has a direct entry course.

“But I want to make sure I’m definitely set on where I want to go.”

For other Toowoomba school-leavers, January is the month of university preparation.

Mr Bilbrough’s classmate Campbell Snow received an offer to study a dual bachelor in humanities and law at the University of Queensland during the December round.

“I was stoked when I got the offer because it was reasonably competitive degree,” Mr Campbell said.

“I have accepted it and now I can’t wait to get there.”

University classes start in February.
