‘Critter’ preparing for huge career challenge

- GLEN MCCULLOUGH

BOXING: Chris “Critter” Brackin has passed two boxing examinations with honours.

It’s now time to step up and put that hard-earned career knowledge and experience to the next test.

In a little over eight weeks’ time, Brackin will move from promising support-card prospect to main eventer when he fights for an Australasian super lightweight title in his adopted Toowoomba home town.

Brackin will meet a yetto-be-finalised opponent for the belt at Rumour International on Saturday, March 14.

The title clash features on Toowoomba’s largest annual boxing show.

The TGW & Smithy Bring The Big Fights 25 card features amateur, corporate and pro bouts on afternoon and evening fight programs.

After wrapping up an impressive amateur career, Brackin has made every post a winner on his professional journey with eight undefeated wins to his name.

But it was the former Stanthorpe junior’s latest Rumours win over India’s Balkar Singh in November last year that convinced his trainer-manager Brendon Smith Brackin has earned a ring promotion.

“Chris is ready to make a big start and big step in 2020,” Smith said yesterday.

“We have all seen Chris rising through the ranks with his own impressive style.

“But it was his last fight against an international opponent that really underlined his potential.

“Chris showed much more mental maturity in that fight.

“He’s renowned for his all-action style which has served him well.

“But against Singh he showed he’s developing different skills and patience.

“We feel he’s ready now for the next step up.”

Smith said a March 14 opponent was close to being secured for Brackin who now has to raise the bar in his title preparation.

“Chris will be in one corner for the Australasian title bout on March 14,” Smith said

“The fight has already been approved, and we are just waiting to lock in his opponent.

“It will be a big step for Chris jumping from a fiveround bout to 10 rounds.

“It’s a huge challenge, but I’m sure his supporters from Stanthorpe and Toowoomba will all be behind him.”

Tickets for the March show are on sale at TGW & Smithy’s Gym in Toowoomba.
