In tune for Qld title shot

Raymont keen to extend run

- GLEN MCCULLOUGH

SPEEDWAY: Aidan Raymont is on song.

The Cooroy driver is enjoying a run of success every competitor dreams of, and he plans to keep the wheel of fortune turning his way when he returns to Hi-Tec Oils Toowoomba Speedway this weekend.

Raymont joins more than 50 hopefuls lining up on Friday and Saturday night chasing victory in this year’s Queensland Modified Sedan championship.

Raymont is no stranger to title success.

He already has three Queensland victories on the board.

But by his own high stan- dard, Raymont has been racing at a new level in recent weeks and is now looking to further cash in with victory in his FG Falcon against a host of Australia’s best eyeing one of racing’s biggest prizes.

“I’ve been racing this class for nearly 10 years now and have won three Queensland state titles,” Raymont said yesterday from his Cooroy

Auto Wreckers workplace.

“But I’ve had a really amazing run lately.

“Things have been going extra well over New Year without many problems along the way.

“We went to Sydney and won the New South Wales title over two nights and then did a Brisbane and Toowoomba

double-header which I was able to win both of.

“The run we’re having makes me wonder if it can keep going, or it’s due to come to an end.

“But over the next two weekends, the Queensland title in Toowoomba and the Kings Royal at Kingaroy are massive meetings.

“I’m keen to do well in both, and if we can keep hav- ing that bit of luck you need, I can hopefully be at the pointy end again at both events.”

Raymont’s brother Mark is among the state title starter’s list which also includes defending Queensland champion Tim Weir from Gympie and reigning Australian champion Kye Walters from Victoria.

Toowoomba-based starters include Rodney Pammenter and Macdonald brothers Shane and Nathan.

“There are eight-to-10 local guys who are great competitors and will be hard to beat,” Raymont said.

“There are a few coming as well from Victoria including the national champion Kye Walters and the field is probably a bit more competitive than you might normally expect.

“But racing against the best can help bring the best out of everyone, and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
