Jabalic causes boilover in her return to Toowoomba
RACING: The formlines of promising Toowoomba juvenile Uncle Frank were enhanced at Clifford Park on Saturday night.
Matt Boland’s Jabalic ($31) caused an upset in the Vale Pat Booshland QTIS Two-YearsOld Maiden Handicap (1210m).
Getting in with just 52kg after the claim from Noriyuki Masuda, the filly first-up from a spell was able to stalk the pace throughout the contest.
Upon turning, the filly was able to get out in plenty of time, running down Ursula ($5) by a neck, with Real Fine Wine ($5) back in third.
Last month before being tipped out for a spell, Jabalic was a distant second behind
Stephen Kirkwood’s Uncle Frank, who has since gone on to claim a Saturday metropolitan victory by over three lengths.
Boland said he expected her to improve from her first preparation.
“She’s an impressive little filly. She was probably a bit immature last prep. Those Jabalis are bred for a bit of ground,” Boland said.
“She has come back stronger this prep. The 1200m first up suited her and the further she goes, better she’ll get.
“Jabalic was a fair bit behind Uncle Frank, but 1000m isn’t her distance.
“I think being a 2YO and wanting ground, there’s not a lot of them around. The fact that she should be able to run a trip means she can get to midweek or Saturday grade.
“She’s a tough filly and was only finding her gears while a few others in the race were starting to pull up.”
# AT Eagle Farm, rising staying filly Violet ($2.60 fav) claimed her first Saturday metropolitan win for trainer Michael Nolan, scoring by a neat length in the Priceline QTIS Three-Years-Old Handicap (1810m).
Violet settled last in the field of nine, before launching a strong finishing burst to secure her third career victory.
Underrated gelding Naval Strike ($41) gave Kevin Kemp another city winner to claim the Tanqueray QTIS ThreeYears-Old Handicap (1400m).
Naval Strike settled a clear last on running, before sprinting to cause the boilover.
