Hard shot ends title chances

BOXING: Chris Brackin found out just how cruel the fight game can be on Saturday.

Rocked early by a welltimed Kyle Freiberg shot, the former Stanthorpe boxer soon found himself “stuck on the ropes” with his head exposed and his corner called the fight.

“It was really unfortunate. Kyle (Freiberg) got him with a good shot and it probably just rocked him,” Brackin’s trainermanager Brendon Smith said.

“He (Brackin) then got tied up on the ropes and his head was exposed and we had to call it for his safety.

“I know the result is upsetting for him, it’s certainly not how we saw the fight going.

“Everyone was tipping it to be the fight of the year but it didn’t pan out that way.

“He (Brackin) was very well spoken after the fight, he knows Kyle got the shots in, but he’ll come back strong.”

The night’s other title fight was almost as short as the first with Herman Ene-Purcell also claiming a first-round victory by way of TKO.

After a sharp opening that

saw both boxers land some heavy blows, Ene-Purcell’s opponent James Singh called it quits on the stool at the end of the first round.

“It was shaping up as a very exciting fight,” Smith said.

“Singh showed good hand speed and footwork early and Herman landed some really hard body shots and got him (Singh) with a good left that sent him down.

“Singh sustained an arm injury which is why he didn’t continue, but I think Herman was looking good for the win.”

Earlier in the night fight fans were treated to some high-quality amateur fights with the City team taking out the Brayd Smith Cup 12-11.

“The Cup just keeps getting bigger and better every year,” Smith said.

“The City team showed real heart. The fighters from both teams were very impressive.

“We had a lot of great amateur fights on the night. Aside from the Cup fights I was also very impressed by Xavier Va’a and Harrison Edwards who both showed real skill.”

Smith also praised the extended Toowoomba community.

“I can’t thank everyone who came along to support the night enough,” he said.

“I know it is very testing times at the moment with the scare of coronavirus around us.

“I appreciate the effort everyone made to come down and show their support.”
