What will it take
WHAT will it take to convince the population of Toowoomba to realise how important it is to look after our wildlife and their habitat before most of it is gone for ever.
We are the voice of our wildlife, yet from our leaders and most of us there is silence.
If it is sensation you want then let me spell it out to you.
Without insects and native animals we will not exist. These help make our food available to us.
If we destroy our environment we will lose our lifestyle as we know it. Without water we will not exist. All the man-made changes to our city will not help us to survive, but bring the wealth and popularity to only a few.
When will people realise what responsibility they have in contributing to the world they live in, instead of only take, take, and take some more?
Is it business as usual or we do we change according to the scientific proof?
According to the scientific data this planet cannot sustain this many people.
Maybe this is why the earth is fighting back with starvation and natural disasters to balance the system.
What can we do?
For people who are doing something positive for our planet in whatever way they can, this is great. There are still many people out there who want to do something but either don’t know what or
don’t think their input will make a difference. I am sure if we are doing something positive for our planet is OK.
Groups like Friends of the Escarpment Parks have made a positive difference to our bushland parks.
They, however have to be continually concerned about people who wish to tear their work apart for their own selfish pleasure e.g. Mountain bikes making unauthorised trails; people who bring dogs, often unleashed, into our bushland parks when dogs are prohibited and put our vulnerable wildlife in danger.
People who continually complain about much but contribute little are only interested in their own immediate needs. There must be people in our city who would be able to give back instead of always expecting that the world owes them.
To think that the easy solution of protecting Toowoomba escarpment from fire, burning lantana, privet and green panic weeds our prominent weeds will not work. It will only increase the fire hazard.
Eradication of these weeds needs to be by cut stump with minimal chemicals and people on the ground to do the work with follow up for a period of time and then continually maintenance. It appears that our council has not put funds in place to do this so it will have to be the responsibility of volunteers. KAY KRENSKE, Toowoomba
