FREE PINT AT YOUR LOCAL

- MICHAEL NOLAN michael.nolan@thechronicle.com.au

WHEN Toowoomba emerges from the COVID-19 shutdown we will need a cold beer down at the pub.

Luckily, Carlton United Breweries has Garden City drinkers covered.

Every pint ordered through CUB’s For Love Of Your Local website will be matched in stock donated to a nominated venue when the bars reopen.

Southern Hotel publican Richard Bowly said about $1 million worth of stock had already been set aside.

“It is going to put $2 million into the tills of hotels on the other side of COVID,” he said.

The past few months have been hard for the Southern and its staff.

When in full swing the watering hole employs about 100 staff but is now down to 25, with another 40 at home on the JobKeeper payment.

Mr Bowly said the situation would have been worse if the community did not support the pub’s takeaway food and grog.

“When we started takeaways before the shutdown we were doing 300 meals each week,” he said. “Now we are up to 1200.” For more details or support the campaign visit: loveofyourlocal.com.au.
