McCullough’s new home a shock to loyal parents

- EMILY JARVIS

RUGBY LEAGUE: Dalby boy, Andrew McCullough made a shock announcement earlier in the week after signing on with the Newcastle Knights for the remainder of the 2020 season.

McCullough’s father and Dalby artist, Graham said that the family was as surprised as anyone but hoped the change in scenery will inspire the next phase of the veteran hooker’s career.

“It was a surprise for us really,” McCullough said.

“My wife Wendy and I weren’t super keen at first but then we started thinking about it more and realised that it was a good opportunity for him to play in the run-on side for a team.”

McCullough has been at Red Hill since his teenage years and has since played 260 matches for the Brisbane

Broncos also earning three Queensland jumpers in 2018.

“We were a bit torn because he has been at the Broncos for a long time,” McCullough said.

“The move will certainly take him out of his comfort zone and it will hopefully encourage him to play better.

McCullough admitted he hasn’t paid much attention to the Knights over the years, but now he is ready to rally behind the red and blue contingent.

“I haven’t followed them much, but looks like I am a fan of them now,” he laughed.

“He knows a few of the players that are already there, the coach and all of the other staff have made him feel really welcomed.

“I’m not sure what next year will bring for him but he is concentrating on what happens now.

“He’s got to weigh up all the different things that will happen at his age so we will see what happens.”
