Empire’s reopening plans
ONE of Toowoomba’s most iconic buildings, the Empire Theatre, has kept its curtains drawn since COVID-19 restrictions were introduced.
Empire Theatres Chairman Andrew Wielandt said no decisions had yet been made regarding how the theatre would reopen once restrictions were eased enough to allow it to operate again.
“The majority of our casual staff were let go at the initial stages of lockdown due to the government enforced shut down and restrictions on gatherings; no permanent staff have been stood down,” Mr Wielandt said.
“We remain in a sound financial position, but like many businesses, we have been impacted significantly and severely by this health crisis and the mandated closure of mass gatherings.
The theatre has also been ineligible for COVID-19 support programs.
“Like most arts organisations in the country, we were not eligible for the JobKeeper scheme, which is very disappointing and could have disastrous consequences for the arts in Australia long term,” Mr Wielandt said.
“We remain strong advocates for Federal and State Government support of arts workers including staff at presenting venues like the Empire Theatre during this incredibly challenging time.
Mr Wielandt said the Empire Theatres board was actively investigating just how it could reopen.
“The board and theatre management are reviewing all the options available to us as we work through Stages 1-3 of reopening guidelines regarding how we best to continue to support our staff and help them through this time,” he said.
“We are also investigating how best to ensure the return of performing arts in our region under current and future restrictions, which could involve performances for audiences under 100 people or the use of outdoor venues.
“At this time, we are working closely with our owners, Toowoomba Regional Council, to come to the best outcome for both staff and the Empire Theatre.”
