THE Queensland Government has announced new flashing speed signs will be installed across a number of schools in the Toowoomba region.

The schools are the recipients of the 2020-21 round of the Flashing School Zone Sign Program.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said there were 103 schools across the state that would receive new signs this financial year.

“From drivers to parents, carers and students, road safety in and around school zones is everybody’s business,” Mr Bailey said.

“Flashing signs play an important role in reminding drivers of the change in speed limits and to slow down in case they need to react quickly.

“It’s part of the (State) Government’s almost $1 billion commitment for road safety across Queensland, and is an important reminder for all Queenslanders to put safety front of mind whenever they get behind the wheel.

The Toowoomba schools set to receive new flashing school zone signs this financial year are Toowoomba North State School (Mort St), Highlands Christian College (Hume St), St Saviour’s College (Lawrence St), St Saviour’s Primary School (Lawrence St), Clifton State High School (East St), Goombungee State School (Lilly St), Kingsthorpe State School (North St), Meringandan State School (Meringandan Shirley Rd) and Southbrook Central State School (School Rd).

The signs will be installed throughout the 2020-21 financial year.

Mr Bailey said the Department of Transport and Main Roads undertook a detailed risk analysis to determine which areas at which schools received the flashing school zone signs.

“This ensure the signs are delivered to where they’ll be most effective, benefiting school communities,” he said.

“We all have an interest in making sure the class of 2020 and future years are remembered for all the right reasons.”
