Bombers keen to end Hawks home win streak

AUSSIE RULES: It’s been a long time since the Hawks have dropped a game at Riddles Oval, 1133 days long.

Goondiwindi have set up an impenetrable fortress near the border that Donald Trump would be proud of, claiming all before them in that time, with plenty of triple figure margins.

It sets up an imposing task for the visiting South Toowoomba side in today’s Allied Pickford Cup round two encounter, but it’s one they’re ready for.

“We’ll definitely be the underdogs,” coach Nathan Stewart said.

“We’ve got the group that wants the challenge though.

“It means we have to be the first team to beat them in two years down there, but we want the challenge.”

There’s no lack of confidence heading into the fixture, after the Bombers shut down the Tigers in the second half of last weekend’s season opener to claim a 73point victory.

Stewart said they executed their game plan strongly when it counted, giving them a boost ahead of today’s blockbuster.

“It was good to get the win and play a good second half, but we’ve moved on pretty quick. We’ve got a big beast in front of us at the minute,” he said.

“We had a good Saturday night after, we always have a good time together, but we’re pretty well straight into this weekend.

“We’ve definitely got some good forwards, so they’ll have to be mindful of our forward line.

“There’s a nice even spread across the field in the group, and that gives us confidence heading into the game.”

In Warwick, the Red

backs will get their first taste of football in 2020 against Coolaroo at WCU Oval.

Warwick had a bye in the first round, while the Roos were downed by Goondiwindi.

The Tigers will play host to the only senior fixture in Toowoomba when they face Saints

HAWKS STRIVE FOR FIRST WIN

In what is shaping up as a super Saturday in Goondiwindi, the Hawks women can pick up their first win of the season in their fixture against South Toowoomba.

Goondiwindi was outclassed by the Saints in their return to the competition last weekend, but will take plenty of lessons from the loss.
