Tigers well positioned

AUSSIE RULES: With one set of fixtures completed in the senior women’s competition, a familiar face sits atop the standings.

The Toowoomba Tigers lead the four-team competition on percentages through one round, however it hasn’t been all smooth sailing.

“I think we’re in a pretty good position,” coach Neville Jericho said.

“We were beaten by Souths in round one, and I think they’ll be good competition this year.

“Goondiwindi has a fair bit of potential too. Once they convert their rugby girls across to AFL, they will have a pretty good side.”

They get their chance for revenge against the Bombers when the two collide at Rockville Oval today.

“We’re hoping for a different result this time around,” he said.

“It’s our Tigers past players day so there should be a solid crowd there and a good atmosphere. I’d like to think they’re up for the task.

“The girls are starting to gel together. When we played in round one, we had 10 that hadn’t played AFL before. They’re picking it up quickly and developing nicely.”

Jericho said the new brigade has laid the platform throughout the opening stages of the competition, as well as a few veterans of the team.

“Tracey Twidale is coming along very nicely, and another former Mountaineer starting to hit her straps is Elise Craig,” he said.

“She had a year off with an ACL injury. She’s finding the form she had at the end of 2018 where she was dominating the ruck because she’s so big and strong. She can stand in a tackle and deliver the ball out. We forgot how good she was.

“Our regulars like Jemma Whitney, Lauren Jericho, Courtney Lange and Carlee Mesken have all been performing well.

The other women’s fixture will see Goondiwindi searching for its first win of the season when hosting South Burnett at Riddles Oval.
