STOLEN CAR CRASHES INTO YARD

A TOOWOOMBA couple has had a lucky escape after a stolen car ploughed through their front yard on Saturday morning, narrowly missing their bedroom.

Nigel Hill said he had been jolted awake by the sound of falling bricks.

“There was a bang, and I heard the car take out the bushes and the wall,” Mr Hill said.

“It sideswiped the bedroom – it was probably 12 inches from where my head was.”

A TOOWOOMBA man has recounted the moment a stolen car ploughed through his front yard and patio early Saturday morning, saying it sounded like “a bomb had gone off”.

Nigel Hill and his partner Karen had been asleep at their South Toowoomba home when the car came off the road just after 2am.

“My partner woke up screaming, I was completely dazed and still half asleep,”

Mr Hill said.

“We couldn’t open the front door, we could just see the bricks scattered everywhere.”

When they finally made it outside, they found the car, a Toyota RAV4, had left a trail of destruction through their front yard.

After hitting a power pole in the street, the car had crashed through their front fence and into their patio area, knocking over a brick wall which had obscured the front door from the street.

It continued into the neighbour’s fence, where it came to a halt.

“If the car had been another foot to the right of the driver’s side it would have run into the bedroom, right where we were sleeping,” Mr Hill said.

“One of the detectives told me I could go into shock from this because we could have been killed – I felt like I was walking on air.”

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said officers had deployed a tyre deflation device on the roundabout of South and Hume Sts at 2am on Saturday after sighting the stolen car.

“Preliminary investigations indicate the vehicle has lost control and struck a power pole causing it to collide with a fence on South St,” the spokesman said.

“Shortly after a dog squad attended and commenced tracking however no person or persons were located.

“Investigations into the matter are continuing.”
