FOOTBALL: Stanthorpe’s quest for a TFL Premier’s title remains strong.

Two second half goals sealed a win for the Redbacks over last season’s beaten grand finalists USQ at the weekend.

Captain Brendan Willmot had USQ in front shortly after the half-hour mark, but Stanthorpe continued to apply pressure.

“It (the win) was a big moment for us,” Stanthorpe spokesman Richard Mitchell said.

“It wasn’t a pretty hard game at times and to their credit USQ never threw the towel in at any point.

“I think we’ve developed a bit of a reputation as entertainers in the league, but we had to grind this win out.

“Knowing they can do that, grind out wins, is a big step for the players.”

Matthew Purcell (penalty 66th) and Aiden Fox (75th) scored Stanthorpe’s goals in their 2-1 win.

“I think both sides should be pleased with their efforts and commitment,” Mitchell said.

“It’s a very exciting league this year.

“A few results either way, win or lose, will send you up or down the ladder pretty quickly.

“It’ll be interesting to see how the rest of season goes.”

Stanthorpe (24 points) lead the competition ahead of Rockville (22), Gatton (21) and Willowburn (20).

In the women’s premier division Willowburn held their spot at the top despite a 2-2 draw at the weekend.

Shandell Robertson (77th) rescued a point for the Magpies after a blistering start to the game.

Hannah Lee had Hawks in front after less than a minute and Sarah Staheli drew Magpies level in the 10th minute.

Lee scored again the 22nd minute and the two teams went toe-to-toe for the remainder of the game.

Women’s ladder: Willowburn 21. Highfields 20, Rockville 15. Hawks 11, West Wanderers 10, USQ 8.
