Kickboxer gloves up for boxing debut

-

BOXING: Another kickboxer will try his hands at boxing on the TGW & Smithy Brings the Big Fights card.

Toowoomba’s Brandon Spain will face off with Chris Oliver in a super featherweight contest.

Spain, who won the ISKA Super Lightweight Australian title last year and fought in Japan’s prestigious K1 World GP tournament, is determined to make his mark on November 14.

“November 14 I want to make a statement,” Spain said.

“Muay Thai has taken me all over the world, but I’ve always had the desire to box professionally, and now I get my chance.

“I’ve had a handful of amateur or corporate boxing bouts as a junior, but fighting pro is a totally different level, so I’m preparing accordingly.

“Chris Oliver will bring it on the night, so I’ve got to match that and bring some more, anyone who knows me knows I don’t know how to go backwards and I always bring action and excitement.”

Promoter Brendon Smith is excited about the prospect of Spain vs Oliver.

“The fans win in this one because it’ll be on from the opening bell,” Smith said.

“Brandon is called dynamite for a reason and Chris Oliver is battle hardened and he has an unorthodox but very effective aggressive style so these two are made for each other. Plus it's a local derby so that adds a bit more spice.

“Brandon has proven himself in the Muay Thai arena, he’s one hell of a talent, but that doesn’t phase Chris Oliver.

“Oliver earned the right to challenge for a State title in his most recent outing, and his knock out over the previously undefeated and naturally heavier Adrian Farquhar on the Mundine Parr undercard is a prime example of his power.

“Brandon has limited boxing experience as an amateur and corporate fighter, but he showed huge potential, he’s a high volume pressure fighter and an entertainer.

“He’s well schooled by his dad, Leon, who I believe is one of the most astute trainers in the World.

“There is a lot of interest and intrigue in this match up.” Smith said.

A showdown between IBF Australian super lightweight champion Steve Spark and Chadd Collins will headline the card.

Kickboxer Collins, who is making his professional boxing debut, replaces Ty Telford.
