FOOTBALL: The race for the TFL Premier Men’s minor premiership tightened at the weekend.

Rockville Rovers were leading the competition at the end of the last round, but a loss to Willowburn has proved costly.

Rovers fell to fifth following their 4-0 defeat.

Willowburn midfielder Alastair Mcgorm opened the scoring at the half-hour mark and Magpies took their 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

“He (Mcgorm) is like a fine wine this season,” coach Jamie McMillan said.

“He has really matured. is a calming influence on the side and driven home a few important goals from outside the box for us this season.”

Mcgorm’s first half strike came at just the right time for the Magpies who were under intense pressure from Rovers.

“Full credit to Rockville, they started strong, and it was obvious they saw it as an important game, one they really wanted to win,” McMillan said.

“They really put it to us particularly early on – the goal came at a good time.”

An honest halftime talk helped Willowburn settle their nerves, and McMillan was pleased with his side’s second half performance.

“We knew we couldn’t take anything for granted,” he said.

“We talked about playing our style of football, being positive and ultimately the goals came because of that.”

Mcgorm doubled his side’s lead in the 53rd minute before Connor Wockner (72nd) and Kevin Doyle (79th) rounded out the scoring.

A late Matthew Noll goal secured a shock 3-2 win for St Alban’s over ladder leaders Stanthorpe United.

Noll scored in the 88th minute to seal the win.
