BMX: The Toowoomba BMX Club is preparing for one of its most anticipated days of the year.

Their annual come and try day takes place this Saturday, welcoming all to attend.

“We always get a good turnout and develop lots of new members with plenty of interest,” club represetative Lee Robinson said.

“We encourage newcomers to come down and hopefully stick around. Some people don’t even know the track is there, so we always get good feedback.

“We’re not limited with age. We get participants from five up to members in their 50s.

“Lots of people from other disciplines, like road cyclists, come down and are surprised by how physical it is. It’s a good workout.”

The come and try day gets underway from 11am at Captain Cook Oval on Moran St.

Participants are encouraged to bring a bike and helmet, long pants, long sleeve shirt and closed-in shoes.

MEMBERS COME TOGETHER FOR MATE

After the proceedings earlier in the day, club riders will come together to raise funds for long-time member Shaun McCarthy.

In August, McCarthy was diagnosed with a brain tumour, and Robinson said the club is throwing their support behind their mate.

“Shaun has been involved in the sport for a long time and into BMX from his early teens,” he said.

“He’s been struck down by a tumour, and now the club is getting together to raise funds and to help his family out. Everyone does their bit to help out, it’s the least you can do for your club members.

“There’s been a bit of interest from other clubs too. Shaun is pretty well known throughout the community.

“There will be four heats of racing with the possibility of a fifth. The canteen will be open for the day, and some local businesses have chipped in for giveaways to help raise more money.”

The fundraiser will follow the come and try day, commencing at 1.30pm.

SIBLINGS PERFORM STRONGLY AT STATES
