Maroske flies to maiden win

SPEEDWAY: Cody Maroske had a night to remember at the weekend, breaking through for an elusive speedway victory.

At Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway, Maroske claimed his maiden sprintcar A-main win, putting an end to Lachlan McHugh’s winning run of four-straight races.

Luke Oldfield made the running for most of the first half of the race, with Maroske playing the stalking role and sitting just behind his rival.

With lapped traffic coming into play, Maroske made his move, sliding underneath Oldfield as they rounded a turn.

Holding the lead, Maroske wasn’t headed from that point on, maintaining a slim but healthy gap to Oldfield, as the pair finished in first and second respectively, with Aaron Kelly rounding out the podium spots.

With the backing of Toowoomba-based Erhart Motorsport, Maroske said he was relieved to have broken through for victory.

“The word to sum it up is relief,” Maroske said.

“Personally I’ve been trying for so long. To get the chance with Laurie (Erhart) has helped me take it to another level.

“We’ve been close a few times, but have really hit the ground running and haven’t slowed down.

“I’ve been struggling with early race pace, so I put a focus on not losing my spot, and I knew if I could be in contention I could pass one or two.

“It turned out that I only had to pass one person in Luke, and the opportunity came earlier than expected. It wasn’t what I expected but it was a great way to win.”

Erhart said it was a tremendous achievement for 27-yearold Maroske and the team, who is still a relative newcomer to the scene.

“For the team, this is what we go out to do. Every time we roll into the track we go in with a goal to win,” Erhart said.

“To achieve the goal as a new team is incredible. We’re really looking forward to the future with Cody, and there’s a lot of belief there.

“Last season when we launched Erhart, we pulled the entire team together in five weeks and didn’t hit the track until December.

“The backing of our sponsors has helped us to perform at the level we need to.”

The main program gets underway from 6pm with early racing from approximately 4.45pm. Due to COVID restrictions it is advised to purchase tickets online.
