Young star on the rise
SOFTBALL: Flynn Edards had a softball bat in his hands as soon as he could walk, and was playing before starting school.
It seemed like destiny that he would reach heights in his beloved sport.
After an impressive showing for the Darling Downs at the Queensland School Championships at Redcliffe, Edards received his highest honour to date, being chosen for the Queensland U12s team.
While the team won’t travel for national championships this year due to COVID restrictions, Edards is still proud of his achievements.
“I’m pretty happy with it, I worked pretty hard to get there,” Flynn said.
“It’s the first time I made a team like that. I love getting the ball and getting involved, and it’s fun being able to play with friends.”
Turning 12 in December, the Fairview Heights State School student has enjoyed a long stint with the local Warriors club, following in the footsteps of his mother.
“It’s in his blood,” Tracy Edards said.
“He started when he was three and this is his ninth season playing club softball.
“His dad was involved in Maryborough softball and the sport for over 40 years and I’ve been involved here for 30 years.
“Flynn likes any kind of sport but absolutely loves softball. He’s learnt a lot from his coaches and has picked things up just by being around the game and watching.”
“His father Chris made a Queensland team when he was younger and is the current U23 men’s coach,” she said.
“We’re quite heavily involved, and Flynn idolises a few of the boys in the Queensland team.
“(Current MLB player) Aaron Whitefield played softball for Queensland before moving to baseball. We know him quite well and he’s been a big influence.”
