DISCO DAZZLERS

- LEIGH PAATSCH

After reliving the glory days of The Bee Gees in the new doco How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, here’s how you can stream yourself back to when disco dancing was the planet’s preferred pastime …

SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER (1977) STAN or rent

This where it really all started for John Travolta, and it could be argued that it was never so good for him again. The funked-up and boogied-down grandeur of that earworm-packed disco soundtrack from the Bee Gees overshadows what is actually quite a dark and menacing portrait of urban despair. Travolta’s performance as a deadhearted dancefloor dynamo is top-notch, as are his signature moves.

THANK GOD IT’S FRIDAY (1978) RENT ONLY

The cheesy cash-in released at the apex of the e disco craze was bankrolled by leading record label Casablanca Records, which at the time was looking to make a movie star out of its marquee artist Donna ‘Love to Love You Baby’ Summer. That was not a great idea, but as a time capsule of the fashion, sounds and attitude of that glitter-balled era, TGIF is peerless. Stars a very young Jeff Goldblum.

54 (1998) AMAZON, STAN OR RENT

Those who carry the disco gene will know in a flash what that numeric title signifies: New York’s infamous Studio 54, the most exclusive, fl flamboyant b and hard-partying nightclub the world has ever seen. This dramatised take on 54 in its hip-shakin’, coke-sniffin’ prime stars Mike Myers (in a rare serious role) as Steve Rubell, the ill-fated genius who reigned nightly over his strobe-lit kingdom. Co-stars Ryan Phillippe and Neve Campbell.
