TRL teams blow out cobwebs in first trials of new year

- SEAN TEUMA DANES TAME

RUGBY LEAGUE: A number of TRL teams took to the park as the start of the season inches closer.

Dalby was among the most impressive in its trip to Brighton, overcoming the

Roosters 24-12

The Diehards opened the scoring in the 25th minute after a crafty bit of work from dummy half helped put Mitch Taylor into the clear, as he drew the fullback to put brother Dylan in under the posts.

They doubled the lead six minutes later, with Travis Babbington throwing a spectacular cutout pass to gift Alex Ambia a try.

A nice bit of agility from Harry Skinner saw him get past his marker, before finding Ambia for his second try of the afternoon to stretch the lead to 18-12.

SHARKS LAY BITE INTO BEARS

The Oakey Bears were no match for a sharp Caloundra Sharks outfit, going down 54-10 at Trevor Mickleborough Oval.

Halfback Nick Ferris made his club debut for

Oakey, under the tutelage of father Jason as coach.

The reserve grade Bears managed a 16-all draw, while Oakey’s U18s came away with a close 18-16 victory.

PANTHERS, PIRATES HOLD TIGERS

The Danes were able to overcome the Wests Brisbane Panthers on home turf.

Scott Fitzgerald, Chris Woodbridge, Jake Johnstone, Laurie Jocumsen and Thomas O’Sullivan were among the tryscorers for Pittsworth in a crisp performance.

At Noosa, Southern Suburbs were downed 24-8 (Agrade) and 16-4 (reserve grade).

SIMPKIN SCORES IN TIGERS BLOWOUT

The Wests Tigers were clinical in a 52-18 defeat of Manly at Leichhardt Oval.

Coming on in the second half, Simpkin showed poise at dummy half, with a forward pass the only blemish on his afternoon.

He was rewarded for his effort with a try in the 70th minute, taking a Tukimihia Simpkins offload on the 10m line, busting his way through two defenders to score.
