HOT SHOTS IGNITE IN CLUB GLENVALE CHALLENGE

- SEAN TEUMA

HOCKEY: The HSR Hot Shots are living up to their name through the early stages of the Club Glenvale Challenge.

The men’s team remains the only unbeaten side through three weeks of the competition, scoring a 9-3 defeat of the SQPS Scorers at Clyde Park.

Highlighting the importance of converting field goals, the Hot Shots were able to add a bonus goal on four of their five field goals to keep them on top of the standings.

Josh McPaul finished with four, with Wilson Love adding a hat-trick and Josh Bidgood chipping in with a double, while Kane Bradford secured a hat-trick for the Scorers.

“I don't think the score was reflective of the game,” coach Ryan Williams said.

“We put together two really good quarters of hockey, held the ball really well and took our chances up front which put them on the back foot.

“We controlled the ball well from the back.

“I think we’re still not as consistent as I would like us to be, and I’m aware that having three out of three wins, we’re going to be the team the others try to knock off.

“Our defence has been really solid. The challenge with this format is that you can be up 5-0 on the scoreboard, but you still need to be focused because they can be back in the game with two converted field goals.”

The AgEtal Farmers and Stafford’s Strikers played out a match of the season contender, which saw the Farmers come away with a 7-6 victory.

A Ben Edwards field goal and conversion gave the Strikers a 2-0 lead inside two minutes, before a penalty corner from Carter Mogg converted field goal to Corey Guse helped tie scores up at halftime.

After a scoreless third term, the Farmers looked to establish a powerful position at the start of the fourth, with Corey Guse’s second and a converted field goal to Dylan Pember opening up a 6-3 advantage.

Just as they looked gone, a long pass from Lachie Brownhalls through to Drew Knecht saw him find the back of the net, and convert the extra attempt to get back within a goal.

Guse brought up his hattrick with a penalty stroke, before Micah Matthewson gave the Strikers a hope with three minutes to play, however the Farmers were able to hold solid.

VIXENS HAND SCORERS FIRST DEFEAT

The CS Vixens secured their second win of the season with a come-from-behind 4-3 defeat of the Scorers.

A double to Heidi Phillips helped the Scorers to a 3-1 lead at the main break, before Katie Wollstein produced her third hat-trick in as many weeks to cap off a brilliant third quarter for the Vixens.

Rhule’s Rebels moved into a share of top spot, courtesy of a 4-2 defeat of the Strikers.

A hot start from the Rebels saw Lauryn Anderson and Felicity Koch score inside the opening five minutes, with a converted field goal from Rachel Macready extending the lead to 4-0 at the half.

Holly Gilbar scored a converted field goal in the 50th minute, but the Strikers were unable to build on that.
