AFL royalty set to visit Garden City

- SEAN TEUMA

AUSSIE RULES: With the start of the AFL Darling Downs season fast approaching, Coolaroo has landed a big name to help the year get underway.

Former Richmond Tigers legend and AFL Hall of Famer player Matthew Richardson will feature as a guest speaker at Coolaroo’s sportsperson

dinner on March 12.

Coolaroo senior men’s coach Miels Grice said it’s not only a coup for the club to bring the iconic forward to town, but for the entire region.

“We’re lucky enough to have one of our apparel suppliers get in contact with us and inform us that Richo was coming to Queensland for a couple of functions,” Grice

said.

“They asked if we were interested, and to have a Hall of Fame player come here to promote the game, we couldn’t turn it down.

“It will be great to hear stories. He comes from a small town in Tasmania and it just goes to show that it doesn’t matter where you are from, you can turn out to have a great career.

“It’s open to the entire Toowoomba public. It’s not everyday you get to listen to an AFL legend.”

Grice takes the reins as coach of Coolaroo this season, and said the club is taking strides forward both on and off the field.

“We’ve reshuffled a lot at the club this year and have tried to set a high standard on and off the field,” he said.

“To listen to someone of the calibre of Richardson, it’s only going to uphold the standards of being a good club.

“We’re absolutely flying on the training track. Numbers are the best they’ve been for years and we have very high hopes for the season.”
