Davidson prepares to Saddle up stable star in Clifford Park tilt

- SEAN TEUMA

RACING: Paula Davidson runs a small racing operation, and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

With just two in the stable, the Toowoomba trainer is enjoying the ride that racing is giving her.

Saddle Boy has made a big impression in his racing career to date, winning three races and a further two metropolitan placings from nine starts.

He’ll look to make it four when tackling the Get Out Stakes Class 3 Handicap (1050m) at Clifford Park on Saturday night, and Davidson is expecting the gelding to once again give a strong account of himself.

“(The rise in distance) shouldn’t be a problem, he’ll handle that fine,” Davidson said.

“He likes Clifford Park. It’s his home track and he’s much more relaxed here.

“He’s a jump and run type of fella, and I think he’ll be very competitive again. He’s an honest type and we’re pretty rapt with him.”

A home-bred, Davidson said she has Bob Frappell to thank for the decision to sire to Tycoon Ruler.

“We actually bred him ourselves,” she said.

“We had our mare Saddle Your Pride go down to foal at Clear Mountain at Greenmount.

“Bob said why don’t you put her to Tycoon Ruler, and he’s given us a good ride since then.

“I know they go well out of the breeding. Michael Nolan has had a few from the sire that have raced well.”

Saddle Boy’s half sister Sadle Your Pride is also in the stable, and Davidson hinted we may see the unraced five-yearold hit the track soon.

“I enjoy just training a few. It’s a big industry and a great thrill when the little people can get a few wins along the way,” she said.

“We have his half-sister that is untried. He’ll be going for a spell soon, so we might bring her in.” BEST BET – Ashzaya (Race 3 No 3)

Resumes from a spell after winning two races last prep. Has good tactical speed and will relish the sprint trip.
