Magpies swoop on Warwick

FOOTBALL: A clinical second half has kept Willowburn’s unbeaten start to the TFL women’s season alive.

Hosting the Warwick Wolves at Commonwealth Oval, the Magpies piled on four second half goals to record a 5-0 victory.

Coach Mark Fildes praised the way his side was able to break down a solid Warwick outfit.

“It wasn’t as easy as the scoreline showed,” Fildes said.

“We started really positively and scored in the opening 10 minutes to take the lead.

“Warwick were very organised and their league position doesn’t show their true potential.

“In the second half we came into our own. The fitness really started to take over, and it was pretty convincing in the end.”

Captain Kiama Gray netted a brace, and Fildes said he was pleased with the attacking prowess of the team across the park.

“We’ve got a really good squad and have girls scoring all over the park,” he said.

“We’ve got players across the park who are dangerous in front of goal and are providing assists as well.”

Maddy Lockwood starred for Rockville, netting all seven goals in the Rovers’ defeat of Highfields.

In the men’s action, West Wanderers remained on top of the standing with a 3-2 defeat of Gatton.

The Redbacks led 2-1 midway through the first half, before the home side took the lead with Thomas Fowler’s goal in the 48th minute.
