BOXING: Steve Spark knows how big this opportunity is.

Ranked second in Australia among super lightweights, Toowoomba’s own steps up to welterweight on one of the country’s most anticipated cards.

Lucas Browne and Paul Gallen might be the headline act at the Wollongong Entertainment Centre on Wednesday night, but Spark is promising to light it up against Jack Brubaker.

“Brendon (Smith) and I have been putting the work in and moving up the ranks. This is the opportunity I’ve been waiting for,” Spark said.

“Jack is the perfect opponent for that, and I’m looking to make a big statement.

“This fight helps me hit the mainstream, and people all over the world will be watching. That’s why we’ve left no stone unturned for this one.

“I believe this fight will steal the show. We’re both action fighters, and Jack has one of the best chins in boxing.

“That’s a recipe for a great fight. There’ll be fireworks, and all eyes will be on this one.”

Brubaker hasn’t stepped into the ring since December 2019 when he was stopped by Tim Tszyu inside four rounds.

The 29-year-old is well known to the Toowoomba boxing fraternity, with Kris George taking him down for a Commonwealth title back in 2017.

Both Brubaker and Spark landed some verbal jabs at the press conference on Monday, but the latter said making them connect in the ring was what counted.

“We let a bit of talking go at the presser, but no matter what you say, it doesn’t change the result,” he said.

“I’m excited to test out this new division. I feel stronger and healthier. I’m not worried about how big he’s going to be, we’re just focused on what we do well to help us win the fight.

“We’re ready to put on a show, and I hope as many tune in as possible.

“There’s a heap of my supporters travelling down and I’m always thankful for the support. I’ll only grow from this fight and look to push for a world title.”
