TOP COOK’S LIFE NOW A MUSICAL

- KATE MCCORMACK

MARGARET Fulton the Musical, a stage show telling the story of a true Aussie legend based on her bestselling autobiography, is coming to the Empire Theatre this Friday.

Lead actor Judy Hainsworth plays Australia’s leading lady in the kitchen through her journey from humble beginnings to superstardom as a household name from the pages of Women’s Day to every household television screen in the 70s and 80s.

“It’s a real honour to play such an iconic Australian character, but I had to make sure I did my research,” Hainsworth said.

“I read her autobiography, I Sang for my Supper and went to my mum’s house and poured through her cookbooks.

“This role has been different for me as she’s a real person and most of my roles are purely fictional, but it’s been the most awesome experience for me as it is my first big lead role in a nationally touring musical. I have loved every minute of it.

“Margaret might have been best known for her cooking skills and for introducing Australian households to bold new recipes and flavours, but she also had a brilliant sense of humour and was a real character and a feisty female in and outside the kitchen which was really fun to explore in this show, and I enjoyed bringing some of those traits from my previous shows and working them into her character.”

No stranger to regional tours to some of Queensland’s more remote locations, Hainsworth has been dubbed one of Brisbane’s most dynamic performers and writers.

“After auditioning for this show at the start of 2020 and finally landing my first lead role, we of course went into our first big lockdown and the production was postponed,” Hainsworth said.

After studying alongside fellow Qld theatre icons, such as Shake and Stir’s Nelle Lee, actor Leon Caine and Magic Mike Live MC Amy Ingram, Hainsworth graduated with a Bachelor of Theatre Arts (Acting) from USQ in 2004 and said she was looking forward to returning to her old stomping ground.

“I’m excited to be returning as part of a very talented group of people to bring this iconic Australian story to life.”
