The five best sporting performances on the Downs

- SEAN TEUMA

IT WAS a huge weekend of sport across Toowoomba and the Darling Downs.

There were some top performances from our teams, clubs and individual athletes – here’s The Chronicle sport team’s top five performances from the weekend.

MADDY LOCKWOOD (FOOTBALL)

The Rockville striker is starting to take out a mortgage on this column.

Fresh after a seven-goal effort last weekend, Lockwood backed it up with an incredible 10 goals for the Rovers at the weekend.

That takes her season tally to 24 from just five games, averaging just shy of five goals per game.

DAVID ARMSTRONG (RUGBY LEAGUE)

The young fullback is a focal point of the Goondiwindi attack, and he showed that with a four-try effort against Brothers in the second round of the TRL.

His full arsenal was on show. His positioning and backing up was first class, not to mention the speed he possesses.

MONTANNA SAVVA (HORSE RACING)

Received a late call-up to pilot the fancied Alert and Ready in the Darryl Gollan Memorial at Clifford Park and didn’t miss a beat.

Savva gave the talented but previously unlucky filly a peach of a ride as the pair coasted to an easy victory in the feature.

TOM VINSON (RUGBY UNION)

Down 11-3 at halftime, the Rangers needed a steadying influence to work their way back into the Risdon Cup contest against Roma.

The captain did just that, piloting his team around the park and laying the platform for an impressive second half.

RACHEL MACREADY (HOCKEY)

Proved the difference in the forward line as Red Lion caused an upset victory of defending A1 premiers Rangeville at the weekend.

Macready finished with a hat-trick off the back of some nice play, and if she continues to fire, Red Lion will be right in the thick of things.
