IMPLANTS CAN BE DEADLY
A DANCE instructor whose breast implants were recalled because of a cancer link is warning other women of the dangers.
Dallas Dee, 35, had breast augmentation surgery 14 years ago after her body failed to bounce back from anorexia. Her surgeon decided to insert textured breast implants for a more natural look. However, years later, she started to suffer pain in one of her breasts.
“I found that with my job I have quite a bit of muscle soreness and so when my right breast started to hurt a little I dismissed it,” Ms Dee said. “I got on with things and then it turned into this sporadic stabbing pain. And that happened for a few years and then I saw a surgeon, who said I needed an MRI.”
It was not until the consult that she was told her implants were linked to anaplastic large cell lymphoma. These implants have been linked to cancer in women who had them after breast cancer or for cosmetic reasons since 2004.
Thankfully, her cancer tests came back negative, however, scans revealed that one of her breasts had ruptured and she would need surgery.
The implants were recalled in 2019 but she was never contacted.
There is no requirement for surgeons or the manufacturer to contact women about the recall.
Plastic surgeon Professor Anand Deva said he believed it should be mandatory for surgeons and manufacturers to contact women who have had the implants.
