CONTENDERS FIRE IN LAST ROUND OF TRL
RUGBY LEAGUE: The final round of the Toowoomba Rugby League Premiership is in the books and finals are set in stone.
Goondiwindi will enjoy a week off as A-grade minor premiers, with two blockbuster encounters to be played out this weekend.
Wattles will host Valleys for the right to take on the Boars for a direct path into the grand final, while Warwick travels to Highfields with both bidding to keep their season alive.
WARWICK VS WATTLES
The two traditional rivals went to battle in front of a packed house at Father Ranger Oval, with the Cowboys coming out on top of Wattles 26-12.
In front of their Old Boys, Warwick got on the board through the boot of Mathew Marshall, before Dylan Galloway helped them open up an 6-0 lead in the 28th minute, before Wattles hit back to tie things up at the break.
Stand-in fullback Mitch Watson gave the Cowboys the lead once again straight after the break, with a second half double to Mitch Wilson.
GOONDIWINDI VS DALBY
Goondiwindi heads into the week off with momentum after downing Dalby 28-14 at Gilbert Oval.
The Boars struck early through Brandon McGrady, before Ryan Welsh returned fire for the visitors.
Goondiwindi was able to dominate from that point on, scoring the next four tries to lead 16-4 at the break to push on for their 14th win of the season.
VALLEYS VS NEWTOWN
The Roosters put on a show as they took their home game to Nanango, taking care of Newtown 48-6.
In front of a bumper crowd, Valleys were able to put on a show for the South Burnett town, with big forwards Xavier Va’a and John Maila finishing with doubles.
Hometown hero Drew Jackson also got across the line for a try, with Eugene Seddon taking out man of the match honours.
“Coming back from coaching to playing has given me that different perspective,” Seddon told TRL Media.
OAKEY VS HIGHFIELDS
Highfields has tuned up for the finals with a commanding 92-6 defeat of Oakey at Trevor Mickleborough Oval.
The Eagles were simply relentless as they piled on 18 tries throughout the afternoon, with Josh Stanton’s try the only highlight for the Bears in Aaron Cherry’s 200th game.
Josh Fanning scored five tries, while captain Campbell Stewart and Jarrod Lee finished with hat-tricks.
PITTSWORTH VS BROTHERS
Pittsworth has ended its season on a high with a 40-26 defeat of Brothers on home soil.
With both teams playing for pride, Brothers came out of the gates firing and were rewarded with Warren Draper getting across the line.
Danes tries to Laurie Jocumsen and Tyrelle Woodbridge put the home side in front, before a flurry of points before the break saw Pittsworth lead 22-16 with one half to play.
