Boarding parent farewells school

- RHYLEA MILLAR

TOOWOOMBA Anglican School’s director of boarding Ian Basset has announced he will retire after 23 years of working at the school.

With more than four decades’ experience as a teacher, Mr Basset has worked at just three schools during his lengthy career.

But now the director of boarding has announced he will retire at the end of the year.

When Mr Basset first immigrated to Australia, he was in the midst of completing his master’s degree and was looking for employment.

One afternoon while driving and stopping at the school’s pedestrian crossing, some of the male students tipped their hat to say thank you – a gesture that resonated deeply with him.

He then realised he wanted to work for the school and was hired as a supply teacher before being offered a position in the boarding house, where he has remained for the past 23 years.

“I’ve loved every moment ever since I first walked through the school gates,” Mr Basset said.

“My real passion is for boarding … I don’t think people know what it’s like to hand your child over to someone but that takes a lot of trust.

“I love the regional outback and boarding families – they are just the most incredible, stoic people and I’ve really appreciated their support over the years.”

Being the first person the boarding students wake up to and the last person they see before going to bed each day is something Mr Basset has never taken for granted.

With a commitment to each student, the boarding director handwrites a letter to every child when they leave each year – something that becomes a special keepsake for many of them and their parents.

Mr Basset had hoped to spend his years in retirement travelling, but with Covid-19 putting a halt on those plans, he’s had to improvise.

The soon-to-be retiree hopes to spend some time on his favourite hobby, writing, and will continue to mentor the school’s boarding staff.
