Norths hunting Red Lion

- SEAN TEUMA

HOCKEY: With the finals set in stone, Norths are looking to take the next step to get over the top of a Toowoomba Hockey powerhouse.

In the final round of play at Clyde Park, Red Lion proved too strong for Norths to the tune of 2-0.

It ensured Red Lion finished with the minor premiership, but Norths player-coach Kris Glass is hoping they can turn it around in the business part of the season.

“It was a good chance for us to see where we are at,” Glass said.

“Red Lion has been the best side all year, and it showed that we have a bit of work to do.

“All round they were a better team on the day, but it gave us a chance to show what we need to improve on.”

Norths finished the regular season with nine wins from 12 outings, and Glass said they’ve taken big strides to be able to compete for a title.

“We’ve had a young team for a while now and over the last few years we’ve started to see some improvement,” he said.

“There’s a want to get better, and as long as they want to, they’ll keep improving.

“They’re putting in the hard work and committing, and we’re seeing good results off the back of that.”

The two sides will again meet on Friday night to book their spot in the grand final.

Newtown gained a mental edge over Past High in its precursor to this week’s elimination final.

The Tigers prevailed 3-0 off the back of a Zac Sinton double.

Past High enters the A1 women’s finals with momentum after holding out Newtown 1-0.

Erin McCurley Ault’s 58th minute field goal was enough to see the Hawks secure their ninth win of the season.

Red Lion was at its relentless best with a 6-2 defeat of Norths.

An intense first half saw both sides trade goals, before a strong run in the third, including a double to Kelly Davey, saw Red Lion come away in the end.
