YOUNG FOOTBALL SIDE CREATES HISTORY

- JASON GIBBS

LEAGUE: Watching son Sam carve his way through the Dragons line before scoring brought back vivid memories for proud dad Ben Walker.

In the 65th minute of the Sydney Roosters 40-22 defeat of the St George Illawarra Dragons in Toowoomba, Walker scored in almost the same spot as his father did for the Brisbane Broncos in a trial against the Melbourne Storm.

“I have some pretty strong memories here (Clive Berghofer Stadium),” Ben Walker said.

“I remember watching my dad win the grand final with Valleys against Oakey here in 1984 not long after he come back from First Grade in Brisbane.

“I remember playing here a lot as well.

“And to see Sam score in almost the same spot I did for the Broncos in trial against Melbourne is pretty cool.”

Walker was also amazed by the atmosphere in the stadium as 7800 fans packed out the venue for the NRL match.

“It’s a great thing for Toowoomba,” he said.

“Not everyone can get to Brisbane for a game and it’s a lot different here as well.

“The action is a lot closer you can really see what these guys are capable.

“You get a better feel for how elite they are in terms of skill.

“The atmosphere was great and it’s a great result for Toowoomba.”
