Truckies are ‘non cases’

- SAM TURNER GEORGIE ADAMS

TWO truckies feared to have been infected with Covid while they travelled through southwest Queensland have been reclassified as non cases by the State Government.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said in her Wednesday morning briefing that the two drivers from the Sunshine Coast and the Somerset region who passed through Bollon and St George were not infected.

Chief health officer doctor Jeannette Young confirmed that further testing on the drivers came back negative for coronavirus.

Dr Young said she would like to thank both men for “doing everything right” and following the public health protocols, and said even if they were cases, they would’ve been low-risk.

It comes as Queensland recorded no new cases overnight.

Balonne Shire Mayor Samantha O’Toole said the Balonne Local Disaster Management Group met in St George on Tuesday afternoon following the suspicion of two cases.

“Everyone regarded as a close contact of the driver in Bollon and St George has been contacted and is in self-isolation,” she said.

“If anyone in Bollon or St George wishes to be tested for Covid-19, testing is available in both towns.

“Balonne Shire has one of the highest Covid-19 vaccination rates of any local government area in Queensland, and this incident is a reminder of the importance of coming forward and being vaccinated.”

There were now 37 active cases in the state, 762 people in home quarantine, along with 12,760 tests done in the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Victoria has recorded 45 Covid cases in the past 24 hours, including nine mystery cases and 28 who were in the community while infectious.
