TEEN DRESSED FOR SUCCESS

- SHILOH PAYNE

AT ONLY 14-years-old, fashion designer Tayla McFarlane has taken out the top prize in a Queensland fashion competition.

Eight of her nine entries placed in the Ekka Natural Fibres Fashion competition and the year 9 student took out grand champion, winning the open adult formal wear competition with her yellow halter neck gown.

“I got my inspiration from my fabric, I saw the gorgeous yellow Italian silk satin and I thought I’ve got to make this spectacular and I just started researching a lot of designs and came up with a gorgeous halter neck full circle skirt dress with a slit,” she said.

“I had so many ideas but then I came out with my design and I was really happy with it and it did really well.”

With catwalks cancelled due to Covid-19, Tayla said there was added pressure this year.

“There was no catwalk or judging in person so they judged the garments off a coat hanger instead of actually on the body,” she said. “It was really daunting because I thought a few things didn’t look good on a coat hanger, it looks completely different but my garments were good enough on the coat hanger for the judges.”
