HK films censored

- The London Times

BEIJING: Chinese censors are trawling through Hong Kong’s back catalogue of films and banning or editing any deemed to be remotely critical to China’s brutal regime.

The shocking move is expected to be formally authorised by the Beijing-controlled territory council, and follows a draconian crackdown on democracy and free speech in the once thriving territory.

“Any film for public exhibition, past, present and future, will need to get approval,” Edward Yau, the city’s commerce secretary, said.

Anyone who shows the banned films will face up to three years in jail.
