Boy to be laid to rest

- PETA MCEACHERN

A TEENAGER killed in a tragic motorbike crash while mustering cattle on the Western Downs will be laid to rest in Toowoomba tomorrow.

Geoff Bertram, 15, was seriously injured in the horror accident at a Glenmorgan property on Saturday morning, August 14.

Emergency services rushed to the property on Undulla Road at 10am, but devastatingly the young boy couldn’t be saved leaving friends and family heartbroken.

Parents Allana and Darren Bertram took to Facebook to welcome the community to join the family in remembering Geoff’s short but important life at his funeral on Saturday, August 28.

“Everyone is welcome,” they said. “We always knew our Geoff was unique but never imagined the lives he has impacted during his 15 years.

“While our hearts are broken and we miss him every minute, we feel so humbled and blessed that God chose us to be Geoff’s parents.”

On the tragic day of Geoff’s death, the pair paid tribute to their firstborn son and said he’d died doing what he loved most in the world.

“We are broken, our precious Geoff’s a very special boy,” they said.

“He loved God, he loved to share God and his way of salvation with everyone.”

The couple said on the morning of the crash, Geoff started his day off by singing a special hymn.

“Driving out (there) Geoff started singing the old hymn; ‘when I look upon His face the one who saved me by his Grace, when He takes me by the hand and leads me to the promise land, what a glorious day that will be’.”

Hundreds of friends and acquaintances inundated the Bertrams’ Facebook page with messages of support and shared cherished memories of Geoff.

Geoff’s friend Olivia Hadfield said he was one of the kindest and happiest boys she’d ever met.

“Geoff and I were house captains together in Grade 6 and he always cheered me on for carnivals and always was so happy for our house even though we didn’t win any,” she recalled.

Funeral goers will attend Toowoomba’s Garden of Remembrance at 10.30am, and the memorial will take place at the HumeRidge Church at 12.30pm.

Refreshments will be served after the memorial.
