Little characters take over our city

-

BOOK Week has arrived in Toowoomba in spectacular fashion.

The streets of the Garden City have been lined with every book character under the sun – from more typical choices like Where’s Wally and the Mad Hatter, to more understated selections like the T-Rex form Jurassic Park.

Aside from the costumes, Book Week also presents an opportunity for learning.

A University of Southern Queensland literacy academic said Book Week was the perfect opportunity for parents and teachers to use books to explain complex issues.

“Our Australian curriculum has three strands, and one of them is literature,” Professor Georgina Barton said.

“When there’s so much upheaval in the world, and children are either directly or indirectly affected, children’s books can help parents and teachers start those more delicate conversations when needed.”
