NEWS FROM THE PAST

-

The arrival of the Governor and the inauguration of the government has given a great stimulus to building and improvements of a large and varied character are now going on.

In Drayton, several cottages have been erected, or are in course of erection, most conspicuous of which is the neat building of Mr Stephen Mehan.

The Bull’s Head Inn has been considerably enlarged, and when completed will be one of the finest hostelries in Queensland. In Toowoomba homes are springing up in all directions.

Mr Witham is erecting a large building in front of his Hotel, intended for concerts and other public purposes.

The stores of Mr Groom are being enlarged and improved with a wellfinished exterior, and two new public house will be shortly erected.

It is gratifying to notice these improvements because it indicates the healthy condition of the monetary affairs of the people.

The issuing by the Colonial Treasurer of Brisbane, of spirit licenses to the storekeepers of Toowoomba, has given great satisfaction, and evidently proves that our government are disposed to do away with the red tape system of olden time, and act independently in matters connected with the general interests of society.

The not having spirit licenses has been a great draw back to the trade of Toowoomba, which will henceforth improve to a considerable extent.
