Prominent figure’s rape case set for hearing

- JESSICA PAUL

THE case of a prominent Warwick figure charged with attempted rape and sexual assault has been set down for a hearing in only a few weeks’ time.

The 56-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, did not appear in Warwick Magistrates Court when his matter was mentioned.

Defence lawyer Terry O’Gorman appeared via phone, telling the court the case was ready to be listed for a hearing date.

He said four witnesses would testify, including the alleged victim who would give evidence via videolink from another room.

Mr O’Gorman expected the hearing to wrap up in one day, adding there were two elements of the case that needed to be cross-examined during the proceedings.

The matter was listed for committal hearing and cross examination in Warwick Magistrates Court on October 15, where the accused’s appearance will be required.

The Warwick man faces one charge each of attempted rape and assault, and has not yet indicated a plea.
