DIVE INTO PLOT OF A RURAL ROMANCE

THIS OLD QUEENSLANDER HAS FOUND A NEW HOME IN THE BYRON HINTERLAND AND IS READY TO HOST A FRESH GENERATION OF FAMILY MEMORIES

An early 1900s home spared from the wrecking ball has been given a new lease of life in the hills behind Byron. Transplanted from Brisbane to a former cow paddock between Newrybar and Bangalow, the Queenslander was faithfully restored and reinvented as a holiday home, called The Plot Binna Burra.

A part-time sea change suited the property’s city-based owner Julie Granger, who couldn’t resist the chance to return to her rural roots.

“Having grown up in the Northern Rivers and meeting my husband at university in Lismore, the Byron Bay hinterland and its surrounds holds a very special place in my heart,” she said.

“Although our current careers mean we live most of the time in the city, we had dreamt of one day creating an escape for us and our two children.

“We found an old one-acre cow paddock for sale in our perfect location, only a short drive down to Broken Head beach.

“We knew we would only be able to visit the property intermittently and, as a young family always on the hunt for amazing Airbnbs with soul and character, it was an easy choice to turn our completed project into a getaway for others to enjoy.”

The Grangers found the home in a demolition holding yard, seeing past the rusty tin roof, green vinyl floors and broken windows to its potential.

A “casual boho” makeover, finished last year, showcases French doors that swing open to sprawling verandas, VJ panelled walls, original fretwork and 100-year-old floorboards.

“The property, now known as The Plot, is really just that – a small plot of land, with a productive kitchen garden, but it’s also a wonderful part of our story as a family,” Mrs Granger said.

“Now as a getaway, it can weave its way into the lives and stories of our guests.

“Enjoy the native gardens created by Fig Landscapes, the vistas of rolling hills, a heated mineral salt plunge pool, outdoor fire pit and beautiful indoor fireplace.

“There is plenty of space for kids to run around, engage in imaginative play or even play a game of footy or cricket – the Byron hinterland at its best.”

While The Plot is close enough to Byron to take advantage of its beaches, retail and restaurants, Mrs Granger said guests tended to stick closer to home.

“Three minutes up the road is Newrybar and the famous Harvest Restaurant and Deli, and only slightly further afield are two of the hinterland’s best dining options in Fridas Field and The Hut Byron Bay.

“If you prefer to cook yourselves, the Saturday morning farmers’ market in Bangalow will delight, as will the roadside stalls along country lanes.

“Killen Falls is just up the road, Broken Head beach is a 10-minute drive away, with its beautiful walking tracks and surf breaks, or book in for a tour with Aunty Delta from Explore Byron Bay to learn about the indigenous culture and food of the area.”
