TOOWOOMBA ATHLETE BEATEN IN FINAL

- SEAN TEUMA

RUGBY LEAGUE: Highfields has made a resounding statement on the first day of the Toowoomba Rugby League finals.

The Eagles were simply flawless as they crushed Warwick 42-4 in the Agrade elimination final at Kuhls Rd.

The Madsen-Rasmussen Trophy winners kept their hopes of completing the double alive as they were able to take control of the contest and hold out the Cowboys for the majority of the contest.

Blake Appo and Cory McGrady broke the game open with back-toback tries inside 15 minutes, with Josh Keoller helping to send them into the sheds up 16-0 at the break.

A key period after halftime saw the Eagles race in four tries in the space of 10 minutes to put the result beyond any doubt, including Keoller completing his hat trick.

It moves the Eagles on to next week, where they’ll take on the loser of the Wattles vs Valleys major semi final played on Sunday.

“It was a pretty polished performance,” coach Gus McKellar told TRL Media.

“I thought we did the tough stuff very well early when the game was in the balance, which we’ve had a bit of a habit of trying to solve it in 10 minutes.

“We were happy to work our way through it.

“We got the momentum and we’ve got some pretty handy attacking players and it opened up at the end.”

With a surging casualty ward finally taking its toll, Warwick was unable to mix it with the firepower of the Eagles.

“We just couldn’t get ourselves into the game early,” coach Matt Grew said.

“Their ruck speed was really good and we couldn’t find our control in there and slow them down.

“I won’t question their effort because I know they were out there trying their guts out.

“We just couldn’t hold onto the ball well enough, complete our sets and execute our good ball.”

The Warwick reserve grade side went down in a tough 16-8 battle against local rivals Wattles.

It wasn’t all bad for the Cowboys, with their U18s advancing to next week after a 36-26 defeat of Gatton.

The side entered the final round of the competition in sixth spot, and now finds themselves in the final four.
