SAINTS IN TITLE RACE

Rebels Hurricanes and Sharks eager to upset premiership favourites

- JASON GIBBS

COMPETITION heavyweights Saints and Rebels Hurricanes will square off in today’s A1 men’s touch grand final.

The two teams have set the pace and standard all season and are sure to produce a thrilling match for fans.

Defending premiers Saints will start as favourites off the back off their comprehensive defeat of Rebels two weeks ago, but grand finals are a different ball game.

Saints, however, know exactly what needs to be done on the grandest stage of all.

They have plenty of experience having featured in the past 10 grand finals with just the one loss in that run.

Captain Sam Carmody has been a big part of their success over that period, and he will be very important today with the Saints attack revolving around him.

Saints wingers Tom Quinlivan and Campbell McIntosh have been in outstanding tryscoring form and will be a threat out wide.

Rebels Hurricanes can’t be discounted in this clash though, as they look to secure their first A-grade premiership.

Attacking brilliance in Cody Green’s combination with Ben and Matt Moore will need to be contained by Saints.

In the women’s final, Saints play Sharks.

Little has separated the two sides all year so it should be a thriller.

Saints won their major semi-final against Sharks by two tries, but Sharks were impressive in the elimination final last weekend.

Sharks’ first half against Fairholme proved exactly what they are capable of, and if they can carry that form into the final they are in with a chance.

Saints are a threat right across the park, but they will look to the experienced duo of Shanae Ciesolka and Jada Ferguson to lead them.

Sharks will draw on the talents of their Queensland representative Rebecca Mi Mi.

The lower grade finals start from 11.45am, ahead of the women’s (3pm) and men’s (4pm) deciders.

All the games are played at Kearneys Spring Sports Complex.
