STUDENTS TAKE HOME PLAYWRITING AWARD

- RHYLEA MILLAR

TOOWOOMBA students who are excelling in the arts have been recognised for their efforts, with one taking home a prestigious award.

Year 12 student Sandra Miller has taken out first place in this year’s Young Playwrights’ Award for Queensland Theatre.

Winning the prize for her inspiring play Paradise Dreaming, The Glennie School student will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Theatre Residency Week at Queensland Theatre during the September school holidays.

“Paradise Dreaming is about my family – it tries to capture our first moments in Australia and is special to me because I’m painting a picture we all remember differently,” she said.

“I use a broad brush to encapsulate the cocktail of emotions that filled us all, as well as navigating the guilt I feel whenever I miss Africa.”

Through this experience, the young and ambitious playwright will participate in dramaturgy sessions to develop her script and conduct a professional reading.

But she’s not the only student that impressed judges at this year’s awards.

Toowoomba Grammar School’s Gabriel Donaldson was short-listed for their pop culture-inspired play Greek Mythology for Millennials.
