GOONDIWINDI BREAK TRL FINAL DROUGHT

- SEAN TEUMA

RUGBY LEAGUE: Goondiwindi is the first team into the TRL A-grade grand final.

A blistering start that saw them post four tries in the opening 23 minutes proved the catalyst for a 34-10 win over Valleys at Gilbert Oval in the qualifying final.

The home side set the tempo early, with David McGrady linking with Malcolm McGrady to get on the board within three minutes.

A special piece of play on the ensuing set from Glenn McGrady saw him regather a bomb, kick ahead for himself and score to push the lead out to 12-0.

They continued to heap the pain on the Roosters, with a heads-up play from Travis Waddell catching the opposition off guard, leading to a Liam Close try and a big 18-0 buffer through 14 minutes.

A crafty bit of work from hooker Daniel Bain got Valleys on the board soon after, before the Boars hit back immediately, with Malcolm McGrady posting his second to push the lead to 24-4 at the break.

Sam Cocker broke the deadlock in the second half to give the Roosters a chance, latching onto a cross field kick to cut the deficit back to 14.

Goondiwindi continued to apply pressure, forcing multiple repeat sets, before Valleys finally cracked and Michael Hazard sealed the result, prompting the Boars to their first grand final since 2005.

Earlier in the day, Warwick handed Gatton its first lost of the senior women’s season, prevailing 16-12 in the qualifying final.

A double to Amanda Hinch, including the matchwinner seven minutes from full time, capped off a strong display from the fullback.

Dalby is into the U18s grand final after a 26-10 defeat of Highfields.

The Diehards went some way to avenging their loss in the President’s Cup to the Eagles, and are now one win away from lifting the trophy.

Gatton will have at least one grand final side after their reserves defeated Valleys 26-10. James Schroeder starred with a hat-trick.
