Vote on poultry business

Expansion faces meeting

- TOM GILLESPIE

THE Toowoomba Regional Council will vote on the future of a Darling Downs poultry farm’s planned expansion at a special meeting this week.

Alpair Pty Ltd submitted plans in February to increase its existing operation on Volkers Road at North Branch, southeast of Pittsworth, from 590,000 birds to 621,800 birds.

According to the assessment report by planner Shokhida Safarova which will be presented to councillors on Wednesday, the expansion would involve building new infrastructure as well as converting an old shed to cater for more birds.

“The proposed extension comprises one new layer shed with a gross floor area of 3000 sqm

to house 40,000 birds; and conversion of an existing rearing shed to a layer shed, to house 9600 birds,” she wrote.

“The proposed development seeks to increase the capacity of the farm to a maximum of 621,800 birds.

“The proposed new layer shed includes an aviary system and a packing facility.

“The proposed new shed will be managed in the same way as the existing sheds.”

Because the proposal was impact-assessable, community consultation needed to be carried out.

Two neighbours wrote opposing the project, citing potential impacts on odour and waterways.

Another three submissions were received supporting the expansion.

Ms Safarova will recommend the council approves the proposal.
