Wheels of fortune

Which type of mobile home is right for you?

-

Whether it’s towing a caravan or driving a campervan or motorhome, road-tripping has had a renaissance since Covid closed our borders. In fact, caravan production hit a 30-year high earlier this year, according to the Caravan Industry Association of Australia. Want to get in on the open-road action?

For savvy families

If this is your first RV purchase, a camper trailer or pop-up caravan – a compact version of a caravan – is a great option. They’re affordable, easier to tow and easy to store when back home. “They can sleep up to six so they’re a great entry-level option for families,” says Chris Fincham of caravancampingsales.com.au.

For savvy retirees

Motorhomes – essentially homes on wheels with all the comforts – are a great option. There’s little on-site set-up required, you don’t have to tow and they’re easy to manoeuvre, says Fincham. However, he warns they’re not ideal for those who want to explore – you have to pack everything in and lock it down, even if you’re just popping out for milk.

For savvy singles

With no kids to consider, smaller options such as campervans – a van-sized vehicle with a bed, basic kitchen and some storage – can work. These smaller vans are also great if you’re visiting several destinations as there’s minimal set-up.

For savvy explorers

If you plan to get off the beaten track, you need a vehicle with off-road capabilities such as a slide-on or ute camper. This option allows for the mobile home component to be carried on the tray of the ute. Fincham says off-grid costs such as lithium battery packs and water need to be factored in for this type of travel where you have to bring your utilities with you.

For savvy luxury

Top-of-the-line caravans and motorhomes with luxury components such as automatic recliner beds, voice-controlled technology, heated lounge seats and large-screen TVs carry a price tag well into six-figures, but could be worth the expense for long-term travel.
