Shopping trolleys
AROUND the CBD and scattered around the suburbs we see abandoned shopping trolleys predominantly from the Coles and Woolworths stables or their associated businesses.
They are unsightly and obstruct the footpaths. They can also be a traffic hazard.
This does not happen with Aldi trolleys because the $1 or $2 “deposit” system means that patrons are sufficiently motivated to return the trolley to base to recover that coin. Brilliant. I know that Tesco in UK does something similar.
So why don’t Coles and Woolies do the same? I’m tipping that they are saying away from a cost consideration. Hmm …?
Toowoomba Regional Council (and other councils) should be empowered to impound all abandoned trolleys to be released from the “pound” on payment of, say, $20, failing which, they go for metal recycling.
Problem sorted.
